An essay entitled Speaking From My Heart caused quite a stir recently. It was a composition assignment for school and was written by a 10-year-old girl in Yibin City of Sichuan Province, China.

Upon going home after school on the day it was assigned, the little girl did not know what she was going to write about, so she asked her mom for help. Her mother was busy tapping on her smartphone at the time and did not pay any attention to her.

So the little girl returned to her homework and wrote: “The smartphone has taken my parents away. My parents would rather message with strangers on their phones than talk with me. My parents even swipe their phones at meals. The smartphone has completely deprived me of any time with my parents. I have become a piece of furniture at home.”

The little girl added that her parents sent her an article via text message. The article advised that children are better off focusing on their studies instead of their phone. That way, they can do well on exams, which will lead to attending a good university.

The time spent on smartphones can not only affect parent/child relationships, it can also impact a couple’s relationship. Before the advent of the smartphone, one such couple exchanged bits and pieces of each other’s work, and shared constructive discussions, making for an active and happy family life. However, in the waves of smartphone evolution, after they get home from work, they focus solely on their phones until bed time. The home is not as sweet anymore.

Besides students, many couples are being jeopardized by smartphone addiction, which alienates the bonds between husbands and wives. The longer the situation persists, the more serious it becomes, and the harder the problem is to solve. People should practice using their smartphones less and less to let compassion return to the home.
